Hot Chocolate Mix in a Jar

by Jane Lake

A popular jar mix that is easy enough for children to prepare as Christmas gifts for their teacher, babysitter or grandma.

This recipe also makes a lovely jar gift for your office colleagues or co-workers, neighbours, the paper boy or the superintendent of your apartment building.

Hot Chocolate Jar Mix Recipe

Ingredients:
1½ cups skim milk powder
1½ cups white sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa
¾ cup non-dairy creamer
hotcholabeltm (16K)
To Make this Jar Gift:
Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir well. For a finer mix, combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix well.

Store in an air tight container.

Directions:
Place 2 or 3 tablespoons in a mug and add boiling water.

If desired, print the hot chocolate directions label shown at right. Attach the label to the jar with white glue, or tie on around the lid with ribbon and a couple of short cinnamon sticks.

Decorate the jar lid with a circle of fabric or lace, tied on with ribbon or raffia.

Variations:
  • For Mocha Hot Chocolate, place 2 or 3 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix in a mug and fill with hot coffee.
  • After processing all other ingredients in the blender or food processor, empty mix into a bowl and stir in 1 cup of mini marshmallows.
  • Replace the plain non-dairy creamer with a flavored creamer such as French Vanilla or Hazelnut.
  • For spiced hot chocolate, add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to mix, or ½ teaspoon nutmeg and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon.
  • For raspberry hot chocolate, add one package of raspberry koolaid to the mix and increase the sugar to 2 cups.

I have several recipes for hot chocolate mix and have one that adds mini chocolate chips---after adding the hot water the chips melt and add more (as if you needed more :--)} chocolate flavor; also adding a dolop of marshmallow creme is an extra mmmmmmmm! The only problem I have found is that the instant milk powder can turn "rancid" tasing after a time--so when I make gift jars---I make sure to buy fresh so gifts will be tasteful and well accepted---thanks for the wonderful gift ideas---blessings, KT

Why do you need both skin milk powder and a non dairy creamer powder too ?

I really like the hot chocolate in a jar. I made it with sugar twin. I HAVE A FAMILY OF DIABETICS. They loved it. Just follow the directions to equal amounts of sugar. Thanks again for the recipe.

I love ALL your gift in a jar ideas and was wondering how long each of them last? Can they last a year or more?

I would think that most of the jar mixes would last a year, unopened, but it's a difficult question because a lot depends on the freshness of the ingredients used, and each jar mix is different.

Is the white sugar granulated sugar or confectionary sugar?

I have used this recipe for two years now. Last year I made it with granulated sugar. The flavor did not taste anything close to store bought. This year, I used confectioners, it is much, much better. My kids love it!
