Ingredients:
1/2 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup crispy rice cereal
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup white sugar

To Make the Layered Jar Gift:
Layer ingredients in a one quart mason jar, in the order given. Screw the jar on the lid, and cover with a circle of fabric or a paper doily, held down with a rubber band. Cover the rubber band with yarn or ribbon and tie a bow.

Print the Butterscotch Cookies Label and tie on as a gift tag, or glue to the front of the jar.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream 1/2 cup butter or margarine. Add 1 egg and 3 to 4 tablespoons of water. Add entire jar of butterscotch cookie mix and stir until blended. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookies sheet. Bake for 12 minutes in 350 degree F. oven. Remove from oven and cool.

I would like to include the jars "shelf life" on the gift tag with the baking instructions. Can you tell me what the shelf life is?

We love this project. My friend and I got together and made 12 jars -- it is so attractive, and the cookies are delicious. We found that a strong rubber band secures the fabric on the top very well. We were able to make them for under $3.00 a piece, and now we have lovely gifts for our friends for the holiday.

Jane,
Decided to try this recipe before using it in gift bags. I used carmel/chocolate swirled chips and the cookies were vey good. (didn't last long with my "testers").
Very easy to make up (no wild ingredients to add).
I didn't make a note about how many it made but I think about 4 dozen.
Thank you!

Hi there! I LOVE this idea and will be using it with my class of boys with Autism to make a simple but wonderful gift for their parents. Only problem though, is that the jars we bought (they had to conform to certain safety precautions - i.e., had to be plastic, had to fit inside their lunchbags, etc.) are too small for the recipe. Anyway to cut it down to half of even a third??????

All you have to do is divide each ingredient by 3 (i.e the one cup of butterscotch chips becomes 1/3 of a cup, and so on). You will have to redo the directions, though, and reduce the amount of wet ingredients by 3 as well.

What about getting the kids to use old plastic peanut butter jars, and such. they can collect them from home way before you start.

How many cookies does this make approximately? I'm baking these for a cookie exchange at work and need 120 in total, so I need to know how many times to multiply the recipe!
