Jar recipes and cookie in a jar mixes are a popular favorite when it comes to homemade food gifts. These Butterscotch Cookies in a Jar are delicious! You'll find a free printable label on this page to help with your gift in a jar presentation.
Butterscotch Cookies Recipe

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup crispy rice cereal
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup white sugar
To Make the Layered Jar Gift:
Layer ingredients in a one quart mason jar, in the order given. Screw the jar on the lid, and cover with a circle of fabric or a paper doily, held down with a rubber band. Cover the rubber band with yarn or ribbon and tie a bow.
Print the Butterscotch Cookies Label and tie on as a gift tag, or glue to the front of the jar.
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream 1/2 cup butter or margarine. Add 1 egg and 3 to 4 tablespoons of water. Add entire jar of butterscotch cookie mix and stir until blended. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookies sheet. Bake for 12 minutes in 350 degree F. oven. Remove from oven and cool.
Jane,
Decided to try this recipe before using it in gift bags. I used carmel/chocolate swirled chips and the cookies were vey good. (didn't last long with my "testers").
Very easy to make up (no wild ingredients to add).
I didn't make a note about how many it made but I think about 4 dozen.
Thank you!
Hi there! I LOVE this idea and will be using it with my class of boys with Autism to make a simple but wonderful gift for their parents. Only problem though, is that the jars we bought (they had to conform to certain safety precautions - i.e., had to be plastic, had to fit inside their lunchbags, etc.) are too small for the recipe. Anyway to cut it down to half of even a third??????
All you have to do is divide each ingredient by 3 (i.e the one cup of butterscotch chips becomes 1/3 of a cup, and so on). You will have to redo the directions, though, and reduce the amount of wet ingredients by 3 as well.
How many cookies does this make approximately? I'm baking these for a cookie exchange at work and need 120 in total, so I need to know how many times to multiply the recipe!
when making the jars for gifts do you vac pack or just place seal and ring on the jars?
For these kind of jar mixes, all you need do is fasten the lid on tightly. You can use a seal and ring, or any clean jar of the right size with a snug fitting lid, such as a spaghetti jar or majo jar.
Would this same recipe work, and taste equally as good with chocolate chips instead of butterscotch?
I haven't tried this, but think it would be fine. I was thinking of trying it with white chocolate chips soon, or a combination of white chips and toffee chips. I think that would be yummy!
what size jar should I look for at the thrift shop.
I'm making the soup jar and cookies for gifts.
thanks Lot it at 60
There are 4-1/2 cups of ingredients, but a one quart, or four cup jar, is usually large enough, as you lightly pack down each layer, and some of the ingredients (like the sugar) will fall into and around the previous layer (the chips).
