Free Crocheted Post Office Hat Pattern

designed by by Shannon Murphree

Generous enough to share this pattern with us, via Creative Commons, all Shannon asks is that you "don't use this pattern to compete with my sales on Etsy. Anything else is fair game, 'kay?"

As for inspiration, both for the name and the pattern, it seems Shannon spied a gorgeous old lady wearing a knitted hat like this one in the post office. She just had to make her own crocheted version, incorporating such distinguishing features as the little tail on top and the glorious puff-stitch.

Materials:

  • About one skein of worsted weight yarn
  • Size I crochet hook

Directions:

Starting at the top:

Ch 4. Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain to end. In last chain, do 4 sc.

knitmouse (5K) For entertaining reading on knitting and crochet, and musings about life in general, see Shannon's entertaining and well-written Catwings blog.
Now working in the round:

Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc. Join, ch 1.
2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc. Repeat to end*. Join, ch 1.
2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc. * Join, ch 1.
2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc. * Join, ch 1.

Continue in this manner, increasing the number of sc by one every round, until the circle is big enough to cover the top of your head. Most people find that six inches is a good size for hat crowns.

Now, do puff stitch in the round until the hat is as long as you would like.

Here is the puff stitch pattern:

1. Yo, insert hk in next st, yo, draw up 1/2" long lp, (yo, insert hk in same st, yo, draw up 1/2" long lp) 2 times, yo draw through first 7 lps on hk, ch 1, skip one sc. Repeat to end.

2.Do puff stitches in the ch 1 spaces between puffs on the second round and subsequent rounds.

For those who have problems printing this or any other online patterns: If the printer friendly page doesn't work, or just to save time, you can do as I do.
1. Go to your file menu and click on the "save page as PDF" line in the pull down. Click on it.
This will open a page from nitro pdf or one of the other free pdf converters which will convert your file.
2. When the little box appears, choose "open this file" with Adobe pdf 9.0 (You can download this program for free at adobe.com if you haven't already done so. Just get the free version, the reader, for now.
3. The pattern will open in a new window. From there you can choose to print the file or save a copy. The icons are across the top of the page. You will find a nice large legible font for all of the file and it will be fit onto an 8.5 by 11 normal page. Just watch out for the page breaks. you may have to copy or edit a line by hand as it may split it horizontally, a small price to pay for a quick legible copy.

I use this method for printing patterns all the time because if gives me the pictures too, in color and without any hassles. Try it! I think you will like it. Just be sure to download and install a copy of adobe pdf reader first. I use mozillar firefox version 3.3. I haven't check internet Explorer to see if it also has the save page as pdf option in the file menu pull down. Happy Crochet Hooking!

I want to try this adorable hat again. I would appreciate any reply from anyone to my question of 3/09. I just love the hat and want to make one for my 17 year old grandaughter for Christmas. It really is the cutest hat I have found on line.

I made this darling hat for my 5 year old grandaughter! After I completed the necessary rounds of the puff stitch, I crocheted 4 to 5 rounds of sc (single crochet) to complete the hat thereby providing a rolled affect. (Note: 2 sc stitches in each of the ch 1 spaces.)

I'm having a bit of trouble after the "top" of the hat.

[Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc. Join, ch 1.]

I'm unsure where you make 2 sc (because my hat here looks like a semi-circle; is that correct?)

Also, I tried then chaining 4 and joining it --- turned out frilly-like when I continued down the top of the hat..?! O_O

PLEASE HELPPP! :O Thanks! --- lynn

I love the hat as shown in the picture so I decided to make one for me. I was not able to make the starting tail, I instead did the usual four starting chains that I joined to form a circle..then I worked from there. Now I have to work on the remaining 1/3 of the hat and I can see it looks pretty good. Thanks for posting the pattern!

t took me two hats to figure this one out..both are super duper cute. The first direction is the tail..you can skip it or in order to have it poke out on the right side, you can poke it through your self when you finish the loop (join after the 4sc). That preceeds the "in the round" part. For (2sc in first sc, 1 sc in the next 2... etc) I got to 10, you can join and just start doing the puff. It turns out okay. To finish, I did hdc with two strands of yarn for the finishing trim. Its strong and thick and can hide an elastic cord if you weave one in.

This looks like a very cute hat, however the instructions as they are written are incomplete. Could you review your pattern and let us know if you are meaning to do a slip stitch to bring the initial chain together and then if you are to add the next stitches into that ring; how many SC are you doing in each round and how is the cap completed? It would be most helpful. Thank you so much.

Hi Shannon, I love the post office hat but can't figure out just exactly what to do after "ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc * join ... It's the joining part I am having trouble with. My little tail on top keeps coming out on the wrong side of the hat. I would greatly appreciate any tips you can give me. I would also to know the number of inches around the bottom of the hat. Thanks again, Wyona
