Plain glass votives or ivy bowls are relatively inexpensive – but add a little paint and you can make them into wonderful glowing ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween.

painted ivy bowl halloween lanterns

How to make glowing lanterns for Halloween from ivy bowls, with painting instructions and how-to’s for a glowing ghost and a pumpkin painted bowl.

MATERIALS

  • Glass Bowls or Votive Candle Holders
  • White Acrylic Enamel Paint
  • Orange Acrylic Enamel Paint
  • Black Acrylic Enamel Paint
  • White Vinegar or Rubbing Alcohol
  • Tea light candles – real or LED lights

TOOLS

  • Fine Liner Paint Brush
  • Sea Sponge – just a small piece

INSTRUCTIONS

PREPARE THE GLASS CANDLE HOLDERS:

Wash and dry your candle holders. Wipe clean with a little white vinegar or rubbing alcohol to remove any finger prints.

APPLY PAINT:

With a sea sponge, apply paint to outside of holder. Use orange for the pumpkin and white for the ghost. Don’t worry about completely covering the glass with paint. When a candle is placed inside, the spotted areas will add a wonderful glow through the glass.

Allow this paint to dry and heat set paint, if required, according to manufacturer instructions. Be sure to heat set the paint before you begin to paint the face. If you make a mistake on the face, you’ll be able to wash it off and start over again. If the paint is not heat set, it will wash off along with your mistake.

PAINT THE FACES:

The ghost has a simple black painted face and the pumpkin has very fine black broken lines painted from top to bottom (about 1 inch apart) with teeny black dots. If you try the same design, use an odd number of dots between 3 and 7, painted between the broken lines.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

Once you have finished painting the face and are happy with the results, heat set your paint again, to prevent the face from washing off. That’s all there is to these cute little pumpkin and ghost lights. Scatter them all over your lawn or home for a wonderfully glowing Halloween.
