Recycling Crafts:
Recycled Magazine Holders

by Jane Lake

These recycled magazine organizers began life as wine boxes, but sturdy cereal boxes of the right shape and size will work just as well.

Recycled Magazine Holders

Supplies:

  • wine box or cereal box, about 10-½ inches tall, 9 inches wide, and 3-¾ inches deep
  • craft knife
  • straight edge or ruler
  • pencil
  • gift wrap and glue or spray paint

    Magazine Organizers

    Instructions:
winebox (4K)1. Use the pencil and ruler to mark a line four inches from the bottom of the box, as shown in the diagram on the right. If you are using a wine box, there may be an opening in the side of the box used to dispense the wine. If this is the case, use the box upside down, so that the hole in the side is in the portion that will be removed.

    2. Draw a diagonal line from the four inch mark to the top opposite corner of the box, as shown. Repeat on the other side of the box.

    3. Use a sharp craft knife or exacto knife to cut away the top portion of the box, following the pencil lines.

    4. Spray paint the box in the color of your choice, or cover with glue and gift wrap.

    Suggestion:
Organize your magazines by color coding - just spray each magazine holder in a different color.

My house LOVES to recycle! I've been casting about in my head for things I could use to make magazine holders. I have sooo many crafts and log cabin magazines! I could tear them and compile the tear sheets into a book, but I don't want to tear them all up. Many of them have patterns throughout the books and it's hard to save the back of page 13, the front of page 14, half of page 16, and the side of page 27! (You know what I mean!) So, I save the whole magazine. I WILL use them...one day. I guess I'll quit buying bagged cereal for awhile. Go boxed cereal! Thanks for the idea!

    Hi jane
thanks for your wonderful and simple magazine organizer
i made 2 of them, one holding my son's books and the other holding my magazines
its cost effective, and doesnt take much of time, it just took half an hour to do.
