Pinecone Fire Starters

A nature craft that costs very little to make; just gather the pinecones in fall, allow them to dry out, then dip in melted wax recycled from old candles or crayons.

If you like this nature craft, you may also like to see Paper Cup Fire Starters which combine recycled wax with lint or sawdust in paper muffin cups.

Material:

Pinecones
Wax (you can re-use your old candle pieces)
Sawdust

How to:

A fabulous way to treat pinecones. Colours vary depending on the treatment applied.

Melt wax in double boiler , not directly on stove as heated wax can ignite.

To add coloured flames when burning use:

- table salt (burns yellow)
- no-salt substitute (burns violet)
- borax (burns green)

Dip pinecones in wax to coat and then dip in a mixture of sawdust and one of the above items, (depending on the burning colour desired).

These make fabulous gifts when displayed in a wicker basket, nestled in autumn leaves or Christmas greenery, and embellished with seasonal ribbon bows.

I read that you shouldn't burn pinecones that were treated with different chemicals. (i.e. only burn pinecones treated with the same chemical at any one time).

I found this tip in another place about 10 years ago. I couldn't decide what to get kids and spouses and ran across this idea. SO easy and "cheap". I made up "fireplace kits" with these pincones, some kindling, Fireplace matches and an attractive basket to leave beside the fireplace. It turned out to be the "just right" gift. After all, what to you give to someone wbleepedalready has "everything"
