Free Crochet Pattern:
Wine Bottle Cover

Designed by Jane Lake

I had a skein of variegated Canadiana boucle yarn that I had picked up because I liked the colors, and I wanted a simple project to use it up. Since I'd been meaning to make some crocheted wine bottle covers for a while (mainly to give as a Christmas presents), I thought I'd try the yarn out for that - and I'm really quite happy with the result.

This pattern is very easy, and you could substitute most worsted weight yarns for the boucle. I made another version from variegated Handicrafter Cotton yarn, and yet another from wheat colored worsted-weight, with a few rows and the edging done in a feathery type of novelty fun yarn.

If preferred, you can also leave off the scalloped edging, or change it to your favourite edging stitch.

Materials:

  • One skein worsted weight yarn (sample shown uses Canadiana Boucle)
  • 4.50mm crochet hook
Pattern Directions:

Row 1: Chain 4, slip stitch in first chain to make a circle

Row 2: Chain 3 (always counts as first double crochet - or as treble crochet in English terms). 11 double crochet in circle, slip stitch to top of first chain 3. (12 dc)

Row 3: Chain 3, *two dc in next stitch, one dc in next stitch*, repeat from * to * all around, slip stitch to top of first chain 3. (18 dc)

Row 4: Chain 3, one dc in same stitch, two dc in each of the next stitches all around, slip stitch to top of first chain 3. (36 dc)

Row 5: Chain 3 in first stitch, one double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to top of first chain 3. (36 dc)

Remaining Rows: Repeat Row 5 until bottle cover is the right length to cover your wine bottle.

Scalloped Edging: Chain 1, 3 dc, 1 sc all in same stitch, skip two stitches, *[1 sc, 3 dc, 1 sc] all in next stitch, skip next two stitches *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row, slip stitch to first chain. Finish off, cutting yarn and weaving in the end.

Drawstring:

Simply make a chain the length that you want the drawstring. Weave the drawstring in a row close to the bottom of the bottle neck. Just thread the drawstring in and out of every third stitch until you get back to the beginning. Pull both of the drawstring ends out evenly, gathering the wine bottle cover into a snug fit, then tie the drawstring in a bow.
