Recycled Vinyl Record Bowl

by Jane Lake

If you don't have an old record collection, you can buy records very reasonably at thrift stores and yard sales.

These recycled retro record bowls make wonderful containers for potpourri - or you can line them with a doily or paper coffee filter and use them at parties to serve chips and crackers.

Supplies:

old vinyl record album

large ovenproof bowl

oven

oven gloves

Vinyl Record Bowl

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees.

2. Place the record on top of a large bowl turned upside down and carefully place in the oven.

3. Heat for about five minutes, or until record begins to soften and melt.

4. Wearing oven gloves, quickly remove from the oven. Flip the bowl the right way up and press the record into it so that it takes on the bowl shape. You'll find that the sides will curl in a fluted design, similar to the bowl in our picture.

5. While the record is hot and pliable, you can adjust the shape to your liking. If necessary, reheat for a short time to make adjustments.

Excellent use for old vinyl LPs! Who comes up with this stuff? You're awesome. I love the idea of lining one with a coffee filter and serving chips! How about filling it with packaged snacks/toys/gifts and giving it as a gift?

Hahaa..this is amaziin my mum told me to do somethin like this so i need to get to a second hand shop for some cheap ones lol!
You can also make these out of CDs but obviously smaller and then attach a circle of plastic or sticky tape to cover the hole..

Cool idea. I can't imagine how 150 degrees could be hot enough to release any fumes...records melt easily and that's not even as hot as a sauna.

You are obviously not old enough to remember leaving a vinyl LP in the car. Just the heat on a summer day would warp them. =)

this is a really good idea. melting vinyl is different then burning plastic. My friends dad is a chemical engineer and he said it is 100% ok to melt them. i made a few into bowls and i also made a bracelet out of them. they turned out really cool.

It is a beautiful and original project, although not suitable for kids. I made the fish mobile and it came out quite good, although I found it really difficult to flatten and glue the tails. The hot glue had to be applied several times untill it caught up. What glue do you use for that? and how do you keep it untill it dries?
