Jess's Cabled Ski Hat
by Jessica Minier Mabe
This is a very attractive ski hat with a brim that folds up and back. It fits a bit like a 20s cloche and looks fantastic in dark colors. I've made it in purple and a heathery light blue, and I think the purple is best (but alas, that one is a gift....
Editor's Note:
There has been lots of email debate about the meaning of the Pass Stitch mentioned in the pattern below. One of our readers, Diane, sent me photos of the finished pattern, shown above. Here's how she interpreted and knitted the "Pass Stitch":
"I suspect I made a variation of the pattern, but on my daughter-in-law it looks perfect and jaunty!! I knitted the PS as a pass stitch or in my example as a slip stitch as in "slip stitch as to pearl", even though I was doing a knit stitch. This automatically folded the brim, as the pass stitch became elongated and "tacked" the brim in several places. If I make that hat again, I will follow the same procedure."
Thank you, Diane!

Jess's Cable Knit Ski Hat Pattern:
ONE SIZE FITS ALL
Materials:
Heavy Worsted Weight Yarn - about 100grams/166 yards. (I used: Creative Yarns International Hearty Worsted, but an Aran weight would work too.) 16" size 10 circular needle, size 10 double pointed needles 1 Stitch marker
Gauge:

Terms:
C6F: place first 3 stitches of cable on a double pointed needle and hold them in front of the work. Knit next three stitches as normal, then knit the three stitches off dpn.
C6B: same as C6F, but hold the three stitches behind the work instead.
PS: Pass stitch
Pattern:
Cast On 80 stitches onto circular needle, join without twisting stitches, place marker at beginning of round.

K one round, P one round, you're done with the brim
Purl one round, decreasing 8 stitches evenly spaced to 72 stitches.
P each round until hat measures 7" from brim end or whole hat measures 12"

are done).
Then Decrease;
RI: P2, P2tog, repeat around
R2: P around
R3: (transfer stitches to dpns, divide evenly) P2tog, Pl, repeat around
R4: P around

ive never worked with circular needles before. i want to try this pattern. can i use straight needles, which im used to? if not i will get the needles, and try it. im wanting to get outside my comfort knitting zone, and try new patterns. im going to sell them online, & i want something beyond what ive been doing. i want a scarf to match also. i think i can improvise on that.
this is what i think is a well presented site ,easy to look atyour lovely patterns thanks
