Layered Soup in a Jar -- Chicken Noodle and Minestrone Soup in a Jar Recipes
by Jane Lake
Layered soup in a jar makes a super stand-alone gift any time. But combined in a "theme" gift basket they make an even more impressive gift in a jar presentation. Inexpensive ingredients and quick to assemble!
I made these layered soup in a jar recipes for my Christmas gift baskets last year. They were nestled in a Rice Buddy Hot Pack along with soda crackers, pine cones, a Christmas ornament and homemade kahlua. All this in a clementine orange crate wrapped in cellophane and tied with curling ribbon.
This idea would also be a great pick-me-up for a friend who has the flu. Pack in a crate or basket: a Rice Buddy Hot Pack, Chicken Noodle Soup in a Jar, cough drops, Vicks vapor rub, and a good book. Sure to be well received!

What is the shelf life once you make the gift in the jar?
Hi I've been making these gifts in jar for years. Usually I use canning jars, but this year things were so tight, I wasn't able to afford canning jars. Instead I went to walmart in the produce section there were fruits in these glass jars. They run about $2.50-$3.00 a jar. I usually bought one jar a week starting in October. My husband and I ate the fruit, and I washed and saved the jars for Christmas. Instead of spending $8-10 all at once for 12 canning jars, I bought fruits in the glass jar, enjoyed the fruit, and saved the jars!
Thanks for the thrifty idea!
Hi, these mixes in a jar look so good, but I didn't see the noodles in the ministrone soup jar.
Thanks.
A quarter cup of them at the top of the jar in a separate plastic bag doesn't show up very well under the fabric cover. It's there :-p
Add it near the end of the cooking time to keep it being too soggy.
Where can I find the beef bouillon powder and red lentils? I only see the beef cubes and natural lentils at Stop & Shop food stores.
Walton Feed in Idaho carries a beef and chicken boullion that is MSG free. Just go to Waltonfeed.com.

You can substitute one bouillon cube per cup of water; red lentils are often carried by Asian markets or in international aisles of larger grocery stores. Also, try Amazon.com or Bob's Red Mill. Both sell them. They are common in Indian food - bright orange!
Since I had some vegetarians to give them to, I omitted the bouillon powder entirely and told the recipients to use broth instead of water, which you can buy canned quite cheaply, and that seemed to work well too.
I shop at A&P, Shop-Rite, etc... Sometimes you can find them in dollar stores as well.
