Crochet a Popcorn Diamond Afghan

Free crochet pattern to make a beautiful striped popcorn diamond afghan for yourself or as an heirloom gift that will be treasured forever.

Finished Size is approximately 54" x 66", plus fringe

Popcorn Diamond Afghan


Materials List:

Red Heart Super Saver Knitting Worst Weight 4-ply yarn:
8 (8 ounces) skeins of Aran (Color A); 2 skeins each of Teal(B) and Raspberry(C)
Aluminum crochet hook, size J
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 3sc = 1" Save time check gauge.

Popcorn Diamond Afghan


Free Crochet Instructions:

Note:
Work in separate panels as specified. After each panel is completed it is crocheted to preceding panel.

To work a Popcorn St:
YO hook, insert hook in st specified , YO hook and draw lp through st; (YO hook, insert hook in same st, YO hook and draw through st) 3 times, YO hook and draw through all 9 lps on hook, ch 1, tightly (PC made). Popcorn will show on reverse side of work which is right side of afghan. Always work PC on wrong side.

Panel 1:
With color B make 1 panel for Right Side Edge. Starting at lower edge, ch 9.

Row 1 (right side):
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (sc. Ch 1 turn.

Row 2 (wrong side):
Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3:
Work even in sc. Ch 1, turn at end of each row.

Row 4 (wrong side):
Sc in each of first 4sc, work PC in next sc, sc in each of last 3 sc. (8sts)

Row 5:
Sc in each of first 3 sc, sc in PC, sc in each of last 4 sc. (8sts)

Row 6:
Sc in each of first 3 sc, Pc in next sc, sc in next sc, Pc in next sc, sc in each of last 2 sc. (8sts)

Row 7:
Sc in each sc and in each PC across.

Row 8: Rep Row 4.

Rows 9-11
Work even on 8 sc.

Rows 12-243:
Rep Rows 4-11 twenty-nine times (30 small diamonds made). Put a safety pin or a stitch holder in last lp on hook and leaving a short length of yarn, break off. Put strip aside.

Panel 2:
Make 6 with A, put 5 aside and join one to Panel 1. Starting at lower edge, ch 20.
Row 1 (right side);

Row 2 (wrong side):
Sc in each of first 9 sc, Pc in next sc, sc in each of last 9 sc (19sts). Ch 1, turn at end of each row.

Row 3:
Sc in each sc and in each PC across.

Row 4:
Work 8 sc, PC, 1 sc, PC and 8 sc.

Row 5 and All Right Side Rows (would be odd numbered rows): Sc in each sc and in each PC across.

Row 6:
Work 7 sc, Pc, 3 sc, PC and 7 sc.

Row 8:
Work 6 sc, PC, 5 sc, Pc and 6 sc.

Row 10:
Work 5 sc, Pc, 7 sc, PC and 5 sc.

Row 12:
Work 4 sc, (PC, 4 sc) 3 times.

Row 14:
Work 3 sc, Pc, 4 sc, Pc, 1 sc, PC, 4 sc, PC and 3 sc.

Row 16:
Rep. Row 12.

Row 18:
Rep Row 10.

Row 20:
Rep. Row 8.

Row 22:
Rep Row 6.

Row 24:
Rep Row 4.

Row 25:
Rep Row 5.

Rows 26-241:
Rep Rows 2-25 nine more times.

Row 242:
Rep Row 2.

Row 243:
Rep Row 3 (10 large diamonds made). Put a safety or stitch holder in last lp on hook and leaving a short length of yarn, break off.

Joining First 2 Panels:

Hold both panels with last row of each at top edge and wrong sides together. Work as follows through both thicknesses and be careful to join ends of same row together. Insert hook in last lp of Panel 1, join color A and sl st through last row of both panels. Continue in sl st, joining all corresponding rows of panels to lower edge of panels, end with ch 1 after last sl st and break off. Put joined panels aside.

Panel 3:
Make 2 with B and 3 with C. Starting at lower edge, ch 10.

Row 1 (right side):
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (9 sc). Ch 1, turn at end of each row.

Row 2 (wrong side):
Sc in each st across.

Row 3:
Work even in sc.

Row 4 (wrong side):
Work 4 sc, PC and 4 sc.

Row 5 and All Right Side Rows (would be odd numbered rows):
Sc in each sc and in each PC across.

Row 6:
Work 3 sc, PC, 1 sc, Pc, and 3 sc.

Row 8:
Rep Row 4.

Rows 9-11:
Work even on 9 sc.

Rows 12-243:
Rep Row 4-11 twenty-nine times (30 small diamonds made). Put last lp on pin or holder as before. Break off.

Panel 4:
With B make 1 panel for Left Side Edge. Starting at lower edge, ch 9.

Row 1 (right side):
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (8sc). Ch1, turn at end of each row.

Row 2 (wrong side):
Sc in each st across.

Row 3:
Work even in sc.

Row 4:
Work 3 sc, PC and 4 sc.

Row 5 and All Right Side Rows (would be odd numbered rows):
Sc in each sc and in each PC across.

Row 6:
Work 2 sc, PC, 1 sc, PC and 3 sc.

Row 8:
Rep Row 4.

Rows 9-11:
Work even on 9 sc.

Rows 12-243:
Rep rows 4-11 twenty-nine times (30 small diamonds made). Break off.

Joining Remaining Panels:

Working in the same manner as First Joining, join each completed panel to preceding panels. Working from right to left, and alternating Panels 3 and 3, join next 10 panels in the following color sequence; (C,A,B,A) twice and C,A; then join Panel 4 to left side edge (all 13 panels joined).

Border:

Join color A with 2 sc in top right corner for beg of first corner.

Rnd 1 (Right side):
Work 6 sc across first panel, sc in joining between panels, *sc in the center 17 sc of next panel, sc in joining, sc in center 7 sc of next panel, sc in joining. Rep from * 5 more times, sc in corner 6 sc of last panel, work 3 sc in corner st. Working across ends of rows, work (sk end of 1 row, sc in end of each of the next 3 rows) across to next corner, work 3 sc in corner. Continue around in the same manner, end with 1 sc in first corner. Join with sl st in first sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 2 (wrong side):
Work 2 sc in first sc, * sc in each sc across to next corner, work 3 sc in corner sc. Rep from * around, end same as for Rnd 1. Ch 1, turn.

Rnds 3 & 4:
Continue in sc, same as for last rnd, working 1 right side rnd and 1 wrong side rnd.

Rnd 5 (right side):
Join another strand of color A and work this rnd with 2 strands of A. Working in reverse sc, work (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) around entire afghan. Join and break off.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends.

Fringe:

Wind color A around a 7" piece of cardboard. Cut at one edge into 14" lengths of yarn. For each fringe fold 7 strands of yarn in half and knot into ch 1 spaces across both short edges of afghan. Trim ends evenly. Do not block afghan.

the pattern i've downloaded looks so cute,but it won't print the pattern. there's awiting over the directions and some rows. can't wait to crochet this afghan.
