Here's a handy crochet pattern with directions to make three different flowers from one pattern. With a little creativity, you could adapt the pattern to make more variations as well.
Use one or two flowers to adorn a hat or shopping bag or make a fridgie or pin. Add wire or chenille stems and you could even crochet an entire bouquet of pretty blooms!

Materials List:
Small amounts worsted weight yarn I hook Yarn needle Optional: buttons or other embellishment for centers
Abbreviations Beg= beginning Ch= chain
Sl st= slip st Sc= single crochet Hdc= half-double crochet
Dc= double crochet Bpsc= back post single crochet Beg= beginning Rep= repeat Rnd= round
Large Flower 3 layers, 4.5" Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring Round 1- Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3), (dc in ring, ch 3) 4 times; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch6. (5 petals) Round 2- Sl st into first petal, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 3dc, hdc, sc) in each petal; join with sl st in beg sc. Round 3- Ch 6 (counts as sc, ch 5), (bpsc around dc from rnd 1, ch 5) 4 times; join with sl st in 1st ch of beg ch7. Round 4- Sl st into first petal, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 5dc, hdc, sc) in each petal; join with sl st in beg sc. Round 5- Ch 8 (counts as sc, ch 7), (bpsc around sc from rnd 3, ch 7) 4 times; join with sl st in 1st ch of beg ch8. Round 6- Sl st into first petal, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 7dc, hdc, sc) in each petal; join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off, weave in ends. Medium Flower 3 layers, 3" Start as in Large Flower, work through round 4 Inner Rounds Attach yarn with sl st around post of any dc from rnd 1.

Round 2- Sl st into 1st petal, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in each petal; join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off, weave in ends. Small Flower 2 layers, 2.5" Start as in Large Flower, work through round 2. Repeat inner rounds from Medium Flower.
My first crochet item to do was an Irish Crochet afghan rated for experienced needlers. (42 years ago)
This wonderful flower pattern is the first layered flower I have croched since then.
I used the large pattern as an accent to a croched purse. I made a short tassel and inserted the back of it through the center of the flower, and TAH DAH! stamens.
