How to Make a Gold Leaf Trinket Box

designed by Twila Lenoir

The gold leaf motif on this painted trinket box lends texture and elegance...no one will guess the leaves are really formed from glue and gold paint!

Gold Leaf Box
Supplies:

  • paper mache box
  • 4 large beads
  • Makeup sponge
  • Hot glue or household glue
  • Paint(Black & Gold)
  • matte sealer

Gold Leaf Box
Instructions:

Sand any imperfections on the box.

First paint your four large beads gold and set aside to dry.

Paint the entire box, inside and out, in black paint and let dry thoroughly.

Draw a leaf pattern on the box using hot glue, craft glue, carpenter's glue or other glue that will accept paint when dry. Draw leaves all around the box, and around the box lid. Connect the leaves with stems or vines, also drawn with glue.

If you like, you can also put small clusters of three dots all around, but don't overdo this feature. Let dry.

Dip the makeup sponge in gold paint and pat it out so the sponge is moist with paint but not dripping wet. Pat onto the leaves stems, vines, and clusters of dots. Let dry.

Spray the box with a light coat of matte sealer.

Glue three gold painted beads on the bottom, equally spaced, so that box will sit nicely. Glue the last bead on the top - you can cover the hole of this bead, if you like, by gluing on a seed bead or something similar.

Optional: Line the inside of the trinket box with felt, fabric or pretty paper.
