Free Afghan Crochet Pattern: Zinnia Garden Afghan

Bold, bright, and colorful. My grand-daughter loved it!

Completed size of the Zinnia Garden Afghan is 47" x 62", including border.

Each small square is 5 ¼" x 5 ¼". Save time and check gauge.

Zinnia Garden Crocheted Afghan


Materials List:

Knitting Worsted Weight 4-ply Yarn:
18 ounces of White (MC)
9 ounces of Green
4 ounces each of Red, Yellow, Orange, Rose
Medium Purple and Medium Blue for flowers.

Afghan:


Each of the 12 Large Squares is worked with 4 separate. Small Squares in the same flower color and MC(main color).

Stitches Used:


Beg pc: Ch 3, 3 dc in same st or sp; turn work, sl st in top of ch-3, ch 1, 2 or 3 as specified; turn work.
Popcorn (PC): Work 4 sc in same st or sp; turn work, sl st in top of first dc, ch as specified; turn work.

FIRST LARGE SQUARE:


Using 1 of the Flower Colors and MC as stated, work 4 Small Squares.

Small Squares:
With 1 flower color ch 6. Join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1 (right side):
Ch 1, work 12 sc in ring. Join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2:
Work Beg pc in same sc, (ch 2, PC in next sc) around, end ch 2 join with sl st in Beg sc (12 PC's made)

Rnd 3:
Sl st in ch-2 sp, work Beg pc in same sp, ch 3, PC in next ch-2 sp, ch 3; *in next ch-2 sp work a corner of (PC, ch 2, PC) **(ch 3, PC in next ch-2 sp) twice. Rep from * around, end last rep at **, ch3 join, as for last rnd (16 Pc's made)
Break off.

Rnd 4:
Make lp on hook with MC and join with sl st in any ch-3 corner sp, ch 3 for first dc; in same sp work (2dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp for first corner, * 3 hdc in next ch-3 sp, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, 3 hdc in next ch-3sp; work a corner of (3dc, ch 3, 3dc) in next ch-3 sp. Rep from * around, join.

Rnd 5:
Ch 3 for first dc, dc in each of next 2 dc;* ch-3 sp work a corner of (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc), dc in each st across to next corner.
Rep from * around, join and break off.

There are 15 dc on each side between corners.

Joining of Small Squares:
Pin 4 squares together forming a large square. From wrong side of work and working in back loops only, with White sew squares together.

Border for Small Squares:
Work all rounds from right side.

Rnd 1:
Join Green with sl st in any ch-3 corner sp; in same sp work (beg Pc, ch 3, PC) for first corner. * ch 2, sk next 2 sts, PC in next st. Rep from * across 2 Small Squares to next corner, ch 2; in corner ch-3 sp work (PC, ch 3, PC), Rep from first * around, join in top of first PC and break off.

Rnd 2:
Join White with sl st in any ch-3 corner sp, ch 3; in same sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) for first corner, dc in top of next PC; * work(ch 2, dc in next PC) across to next corner, in corner sp work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc). Rep from * around, join and drop White, DO NOT break off.

Rnd 3:
Use same flower color on this rnd that was used on first 2 rnds of Small Squares. Join yarn with sc in dc of last rnd., work (2 sc in each ch-2 sp, work 1 sc in each dc) around, and at the same time work 3 sc in each corner sp. Join with st st in the sc and break off.

Rnd 4:
Pick up White and ch 2, then sl st in sc of last rnd, ch 3 for first dc, dc in each sc of last rnd and in center sc of each 3-sc corner group work a corner of (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc). At end of rnd join and break off. This completes 1 Large Square. Work another Large Square using the same flower color, then using each of the remaining 5 flower colors.
Work 2 Large Squares in each color(12 Large Squares in all).

Joining of Large Square:
Pin all 12 Large Squares together in the order you want the colors,into a rectangle of 3 squares by 4 squares. Sew together same as for Small Squares.

Outer Border:
Work all rnds from right side.

Rnd 1:
With Red, in any ch-3 corner sp work (sc, ch 1) 4 times, work (sk next st, sc in next st, ch 1) across to next corner sp; in corner sp work (sc, ch 1) 4 times.
Complete rnd in same manner, join and break off.

Rnd 2:
Working one rnd of each color used work as follows. Join yarn with sc in any corner sp; in same sp work ch 2 and sc; work (ch 1, sk, sc, sc in next ch-1 sp) across to next corner; in corner sp work (sc, ch 2, sc). Complete rnd in same manner, join and break off.

Finishing:
Weave in all ends.
