Wrapping Paper Ornaments

These cute penguins are from my stash of Christmas wrapping paper. You can recycle wrapping paper for this craft, or use up those awkward end-of-roll pieces left over from gift wrapping. Cereal box cardboard, or similar, makes the base.

If you have enough of the same design, why not string some of the ornaments together to make a garland or Christmas mobile?

Craft Supplies:

• scrap cardboard
• wrapping paper with a suitable design to cut out
• ribbon for hanging
• scissors
• glue stick
• paper punch
• optional - glitter

I cut a round or rectangular template out of cardboard, matched with the size of the design that I wanted to cut from the wrapping paper. Use these first cardboard shapes as templates to draw around on more cardboard, until you have enough shapes to cut out as needed.

Pick up one of your cardboard pieces and position it on the wrapping paper, over the design that you want to feature. Draw lightly around the cardboard in pencil. Cut around the ouline that you just drew. You now have a circle or square of paper that will be glued to the cardboard. Repeat this step, using the same design for both sides of the ornament.

Position the first piece of paper on the cardboard, and put your finger at the edge of it to hold it still. With the other hand, apply glue from the glue stick to the cardboard, rubbing it around in a nice, smooth application. Gradually press the paper down onto the glue, smoothing it gently as you go to avoid getting bubbles in the paper.

Lift off your finger, turn the ornament around, and apply a little glue to the spot where you held it. Press the paper down.

If you wish, create a sparkling border for your ornament by adding glitter around the edge.

Finally, punch a hole at the top of the ornament, thread with ribbon and tie the ribbon in a loop to hang.
