This vintage pattern for a knitted teacosy cover is extracted from Woolcraft: A Practical Guide to Knitting & Crochet.

woolcraft (16K)
Originally published in 1915 in Halifax, England by Patons and Baldwin, Woolcraft was part of a collection of knitting and crochet "recipe" booklets designed for use with Patons and Baldwin wool yarns.

It offers a knitting and crochet needle gauge, a discussion of the various types of wool used, and "Reliable Instructions on the Use of Knitting Wools in the production by hand of Serviceable Garments for Every-day Wear.

Thanks to the laudable efforts of the Antique Pattern Library this booklet (Beehive Knitting Booklet No. 9) has been scanned into three separate PDF files and is available for free viewing or download.

If you would like more information on the Beehive Scotch Fingering wool used to knit the tea cosy, or wish to see the knitting needle gauge, check out the first of these PDF files at Antique Pattern Library: Beehive Knitting Booklet Pages 1-26.

This is a lovely pattern,I've made 5 in various colours for family and friends and everyone says how well they keep the tea hot as it has a double thickness with the lining. Also easily adapted to fit any size teapot.

Patons and Baldwins did not amalgamate until 1920. J&J Baldwin published the first edition of Woolcraft in 1914 (edited by Marjory Tillotson). It looks as though your picture is of the 3rd edition which was published just before the end of WW1. Thank you for sharing the pattern - I look forward to knitting it.

On row 16, what does it mean when it says "wool forward"? Thank you so much.
