One of the first things that I ever tried to make using a sewing machine was the owl pillow from Simplicity 9740 Vintage Sewing Pattern Pillow Toys Pajama Bags. Amazing that it’s still available from private sellers on Amazon; marked as Vintage, no less, which sort of dates me a little bit, doesn’t it?
But I’m sure people are still sewing pillows as their first project on a sewing machine. And, after (umph, cough…) all these years, I’m still sewing up cushions for my sofa whenever I want a change in decor that doesn’t require taking out a bank loan.
The collection of Free Pillow Sewing Patterns on AFC has grown enough now to merit its own page, and I hope you find it useful.
You’ll find basic pillow making instructions, along with some easy pillow patterns as well as instructions for making pillows embellished with lace or with heart appliques. One of the most popular pillows is made from a recycled t-shirt, which just goes to show you how attached we can get to certain cherished items of clothing.
I’ve used the pattern to make tea towel pillows and found it very satisfying as a quick little sewing project. For a larger version, use a bath pillow.
You can often recover old cushions, in which case you won’t need anything to form the base, but if you do, Amazon has a nice selection of Pillow Forms and Fibrefill
