Back to School Party

walking to schoolWhat better way to kick off the new school year then with an old fashioned BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY!

Summer is over and it’s time to return to days of learning. Most children welcome the return of school because it means meeting up with long lost friends and sharing of what they did over the summer months. It also means long hours of hard work, learning, and yuck, h-o-m-e-w-o-r-k!

So what better way to kick off the new school year then with an old fashioned BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY!

There are actually two ways to go about this, have the party at home or in the classroom. If you have a party at your home, you can do so before the school year starts and invite last year’s classmates (just incase some are in a different class this year).

If you wait until school has started, you can meet with the new teacher and plan a party in the classroom. The latter will give the students a chance to get to know each other and form new friendships.

For the Back To School “At Home” Party!

Invitations:
If you plan on having the party at home, go for something fun like a yellow school bus or apples.

Tell the kids where to meet and what is expected of them. For instance, if you are planning a swimming party, ask the kids to bring their swimsuits and towels. If you are planning on having them talk about their summer, ask them to think about what they did over the summer and come prepared to share.

starting schoolDecorations:
You can purchase a Back to School Banner or have your kids color one of their own. Again, consider the school theme and use red apples, a yellow school bus, pencils, paper clips, and notepads.

Use streamers throughout the back yard and tie yellow balloons to the trees and outdoor furniture.

Food:
Kids love simple things and they love junk food! So why not combine the two.

How about Jell-O snacks in the shape of school supplies?

A cake to look like a blackboard? You can order a rectangle cake, covered in black frosting. Then have “Welcome Back Class! Teacher’s Name” written in white icing.

Pizza would make a simple addition, but you could go all out and have a barbecue with hot dogs, hamburgers, carne asada, and roasted corn on the cob!

And don’t forget the drinks, how about some old fashioned punch! After all, soda would only mean a tons of half full cans lingering around.

Party Favors:
With the theme being “Back to School” it only seems fitting to add some school supplies as gifts for the kids to take home or bring to class. But why not make things a little more fun! Instead of simply handing out a bag full of goodies, why not have a Scavenger Hunt with pencils, erasers and other school supplies!

Games:
You can divide the kids up into groups and give them a treasure map which they are to use to locate the items. Or simply give them a piece of paper with clues, in which they have to figure out what the item is, or where the item is located.

(If you choose to have the party in the classroom, you can still play this game by placing the items around the classroom; under chairs, in desks, on counters.)

Charades or Pictionary would be a nice touch! You could have each of the kids write down what they did over the summer, then transform those ideas into a game! You can place all the ideas in a bucket and have each child pull an idea out or have the child with the event perform, while the other children guess what he or she did over the summer!

You can even spice it up a bit and have a lip sync contest. First prize, a Free Homework Pass! (Courtesy of the teacher, of course!)

The most important thing is for the kids to have this chance to get together and hang out.
