Sew a Skirt from Blue Jeans

denim skirtRecycling Jeans into a Skirt

I have admired the free sewing patterns available on SavvySeams.com for a long time. The site is no longer being updated, so I don’t know how long the patterns will be available, but the owner of the site has generously made her work available via a Creative Commons 2.0 license.

I already have some of the patterns reprinted here at AllFreeCrafts, including How to Sew an Oven Glove, and How to Make a Pillow from a T-shirt.

This latest project, however, is a long one, with large, detailed photos to show you each step in the process of Recycling Blue Jeans into a Skirt. The method shown consists of cutting off the jean legs, using the legs to make four triangular panels, then sewing the panels as insets to the front, back and sides of the skirt. A two-panel method can also be used, by adding panels only to the sides. finished skirt

I’m not sure how my Sears sewing machine would cope with the thick denim, but I think both my antique Singers would deal with it just fine. Whatever machine you have, I’d make sure you start off with a nice, new, sharp needle, rated for denim weight, before tackling this pattern.

If anyone tries this, I’d love to see photos of how your blue jean skirts turn out. I’d especially like to see how the skirt looks with a hem, as this version is left au naturale.
