You probably have all the ingredients to make salt dough in your kitchen pantry. Essentially, it’s a mix of salt, flour and water, although you can play around with the amounts and add additional ingredients to obtain different effects in your salt dough creations.
Here are two free Halloween salt dough crafts, just added to our Halloween Crafts section.
Halloween Salt Dough Creatures
Make these Halloween decorations from a basic salt dough recipe which is rolled like cookie dough. Create your creatures by cutting them with Halloween cookie cutters, then baking, and painting.

Salt Dough Pumpkins
Use the same basic salt dough recipe to make salt dough pumpkins. These would look great as part of a table centerpiece for fall or Halloween. Mold the ball shapes with your hands, bake, then paint and decorate.
Please see Salt Dough Folk Art Projects for more salt dough tips and techniques, including recipes for fine salt dough suitable for filigree work and a firm salt dough recipe used to craft tiles. This article also discusses making different colored doughs (an alternative to painting), although all salt dough creations should be sealed with varnish, either matte or gloss, for permanent protection.
Morton Salt has also produced a free PDF salt dough handbook. You can also obtain a printed copy by mail for a small sum. Check it out at Morton Salt Dough it Yourself® Handbook Rises Again
