I’ve always been fascinated with mosaics, ever since my father incorporated a mosaic fish into the limestone fireplace that he built for us when I was a child. The process of arranging the irregular-shaped mosaic tiles in such a way that an angelfish appeared was magical.
I’ve had this page on How to Make a Mosaic Table posted for quite some time, but recent comments proved that it wasn’t quite enough. So I’ve updated the page, adding more information on direct and indirect mosaic construction, including some treasures that I found out and about on the net.
Now you can access some great step-by-step mosaic tutorials, along with an interesting two minute video showing how to make a mosaic table from broken plates bought at Goodwill. The how-to video includes a segment on how to smash the plates - in this case, the plates were enclosed in a pillowcase and launched off an apartment balcony. Effective, but not quite as dramatic as you might suppose, since many larger pieces remained. Of course, if you’re going to try this, you do so at your own risk, and I’m not responsible if someone happens to be standing below when your pillowcase of assorted dinnerware comes crashing down.
