Oreo Truffles -Homemade Gift for Men!

Oreo trufflesI’ve never had guys ask me for a recipe before, but I did today - the men in our family adored the homemade Oreo Truffles that I mentioned in my last blog.  They actually passed them around to each other, which was another first for me - usually I’m the one extending the plate of cookies and pressing them to take one.  Not this time!

I’m excited about this, because it has the potential to solve one of the trickier questions that women face at Christmas or for birthdays, which is “What should I give my … brother, Uncle, father, son?” ( just fill in the blank to suit the difficult-to-buy-for males in your life.)

Well, here’s one definite possibility - trust me on this!  Whenever a box of chocolates or a plate of cookies just won’t cut it, think Oreo truffles.  Since they are homemade, these chocolate bon bons allow you to make a personal gift without going over the top.  They are also richly decadent and chockfull of whatever it is that makes Oreo Cookies one of the most popular cookies in the world.  Think of Oreos as your secret ingredient - there’s no need to tell those guys that it’s actually a memory trip back to Mom, and milk and cookies after school, that makes them yearn for more, now is there?

Am I going to share this recipe with the men who asked for it?  Not on your life!  There’s always next Christmas, and this way I’ll have something to give them that I know they will be anticipating; always a good plan with men - or when you’re entertaining - keep ‘em wanting more!

I also had a reader email me today, asking for the Oreo Truffle recipe so I’m sending her a link to this page.  The following recipe is an adaptation of one of the Oreo truffles at recipezaar - I just added some alternative coatings, which worked  well.  With more time, I might try the dipped in white chocolate and drizzled with dark chocolate versions, but I was mighty pleased with the simplicity of rolling truffles in cookie crumbs, coconut or nuts.  be quietThis gave the guys a reason to sample each kind, and they did, so I figure it’s a winner.

One more secret that you must keep to yourself - how very easy these are to make!

Oreo Truffles Recipe

1 package of Oreo cookies or enough to make 4 cups of Oreo cookie crumbs
2 packages of cream cheese, softened
2-1/4 cups of good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips

optional:  medium flaked coconut or ground walnuts to coat

Use a food processor or blender to reduce all the Oreo cookies to fine crumbs.  Set aside.

Melt chocolate in a double boiler OR empty chocolate chips into a large microwaveable mixing bowl and microwave on high, stirring at 45 second increments, until the chips are melted.  It shouldn’t take more than two or three minutes - but watch carefully, as chocolate goes from melted to burnt very quickly in the microwave.

Add softened cream cheese and mix thoroughly with chocolate, until all white streaks are gone.

Add three cups of the Oreo crumbs.  The mixture will be stiff, but continue stirring until it is thoroughly combined and fairly smooth.

Set out a shallow bowl containing the last cup of Oreo crumbs.

Form mixture into small balls (about 3/4″) and roll in Oreo crumbs, coconut or ground nuts to lightly coat.

Place each Oreo truffle into a paper candy cup.  Store in the fridge and serve slighly chilled for the best texture and taste.
