Summer Nature Crafts for Kids

Nature abounds with free summer activities for the kids. Here’s how to make a nature collage, apple and pear prints, daisy chain, pine cone bird feeder, flower wreath, seashell soap dish or seashell wind chimes.

Nature Walk Ideas:

Take children on a nature walk and collect natural materials for crafts that you can make at home. Here’s how to use some common nature treasures:

  • pinecones or teasels: add to wreaths, hang from twig mobiles, paint and decorate as Christmas decorations
  • seashells: store in a jar as a keepsake, glue to picture frames, add google eyes and make whimsical figures, hang as a mobile
  • feathers: add to hats, use as old-fashioned quill pens, glue on as the tail feathers of a painted Thanksgiving turkey
  • sticks or twigs: tie two twigs or sticks together in a cross shape to make the base of a nature mobile; use to make Ojo de Dios or God’s Eyes weavings or make rustic photo frames
  • sand: add powdered tempera paint to color the sand, then use different colors to make layered sand art in baby food jars or use sand as a substitute for glitter in children’s art projects)
  • stones and pebbles: paint pebbles as ladybugs or other creatures, paint as flowers or fridge magnets or start a rock collection
  • leaves and flowers: use a large telephone book to press leaves and flowers for decoupage or collage pictures or hang upside down to dry and arrange in bouquets
  • seed pods or nuts: add to wreaths, hang from mobiles, glue in a three-dimensional nature collage)
